Essay questions (5 points per essay)
The two romances in this musical quickly develop into love but then are shattered by the prejudices of Nellie and Cable.
1. Do you believe in love at first sight? Do you think it's possible that these characters were in love or do you think it was merely a powerful infatuation? Share your views in at least 150 words.
2. Do you agree with Cable that "You've got to be carefully taught" when it comes to racism and prejudice? Why do you think these characters felt the way they did and so were unable to commit fully to their relationships? This is a tricky topic but it's such an important theme in the show it should be discussed (at least 150 words)

Extra Credit
Pick one of the following options to submit. Each option is worth 30 points.
A. Reseach
The central theme of this musical is racism and prejudice (with love and war playing a part too!). There have been many historical figures and more recent campaigners who have spoken about the need for equal rights for all people regardless of race, colour, religious beliefs and gender (to name but a few). Find out about one of these people and tell me a bit about what they did to fight/campaign for equality. Minimum 300 words.
B. Musical
You know the drill by now! Choose one of the songs from South Pacific (any song, not just those mentioned in the lesson) and sing or play me your own version of it. Record it as a video or audio file and send a link to your uploaded performance to the class email. I'm looking for effort and you will be rewarded for attempting this task. You do not have to sing the whole song (some of them are rather long with many parts) but you should attempt at least a minute of music if you want full credit.
C. Art
Draw me a picture of the mysterious island of Bali Ha'i as you think it looks. Upload your image to a file sharing website and send it to the class email. Be colourful and be creative!
D. Puzzle
Time for a bit of geography! Below is a map of the Pacific ocean and its islands. Unfortunately, some of the names have been removed (a magic spell gone wrong perhaps) and your help is needed to name them. 3 points per island/country named.
